May 21, 2019

Silver Bullet Software

May 21, 2019

A silver bullet is a metaphor for a simple, seemingly magical, solution to a difficult problem. The question is: In technology, is there a silver bullet solution? The answer is “no”.

At LuminFire our fundamental business is building custom (or “bespoke” as they say in Europe) software solutions. Why? Because there is no silver bullet…or solution that answers all your business needs. Sure there are some amazing software packages out there…but none of them do everything exactly the most effective way you need it for your business.

Troubleshooting FileMaker Application Issues

May 21, 2019

Sometimes, your FileMaker application installation gets confused or corrupted where it may exhibit strange behavior. Symptoms might include the Script Workspace, Manage Security, or Manage Layouts windows showing up as blank.

FileMaker seems sensitive to the upgrade to macOS Mojave where we have seen this happen more often. Here we have a quick solution.

First, “Have you tried turning it on and off again?”. This is always a good troubleshooting first step in any environment. Sometimes quitting the app and opening it again is enough. If not, restart your computer and see if the problem goes away.

Create Directories Via Script Step With FileMaker 17

May 21, 2019

One of the great strengths of FileMaker is its ability to export data to a user’s computer in a variety of formats. With FileMaker 16 and earlier, a developer had limited choices as to where the export files would be saved. One could set a variable with the user’s Desktop path, or the path to the temporary folder, or hard code in an expected path. With all of these options, the directory (i.e., folder) had to already exist. One could not create a new directory as part of the scripted export.
